Getting Started

How do I restore a photo?

Open the app and tap Restore on the dashboard. Pick a photo from your camera roll, Files, a flatbed scan, or AirDrop, then tap Restore. When it’s done, the result screen lets you compare before and after, then save or share. There’s no mask to paint, no brush, and no prompt to type.

How does the before/after slider work?

Drag the handle across the photo to compare the original with the restored version. If you don’t love the result, tap Reject & Retry to generate a new one — it’s free, and we never charge you for a result you reject.

What’s the difference between Restore and Colorize?

Restore repairs damage — water stains, mold and foxing, tears, scratches, creases, and fading. Colorize is a companion mode that adds natural, era-appropriate color to black-and-white photos. Colorize and batch restore are unlocked with Premium.

Damage & Results

What kinds of damage can it fix?

Water stains, mold and foxing spots, tears, scratches, deep creases and folds, and faded or washed-out detail on old prints and scans.

The restore didn’t fully fix the damage. Why?

Stain Remover uses generative AI to reconstruct damaged areas, so results are an AI reconstruction rather than an exact reproduction. Very heavily destroyed regions may not fully recover, and fine detail can be approximate. Tap Reject & Retry for a different result — it’s free.

Does it change faces?

The model is tuned for old prints so it preserves likeness as much as possible, but on severely damaged regions it may approximate detail. Always check the before/after slider, and retry free if a result isn’t right. The App makes no claim of forensic or identity accuracy.

Does it work on black & white photos?

Yes. Restore repairs the damage on a black-and-white photo, and you can toggle Colorize (Premium) to add natural color on the same one-tap flow.

Importing & Saving

Where can I import photos from?

Your camera roll, Files / iCloud Drive, a flatbed scan, or AirDrop — anywhere you can get the image onto your iPhone.

What formats are supported?

Common photo formats including JPEG, PNG, and HEIC. With Premium, you can download full-resolution results as PNG or JPG.

Can I restore a whole album at once?

Yes — batch restore lets you process a whole album of scanned snapshots in one go. Batch restore and full history are Premium features.

Free vs Premium

What’s free vs Premium?

Free: 1 full-resolution but watermarked restore per device, plus an optional +1 when you share. Includes the before/after compare slider and free reject & retry. Premium: unlimited restores (fair use ~40/month) with no watermark, full-resolution PNG/JPG downloads, Colorize, batch album restore, and full restore history.

Is there a free trial?

Yes — the Premium Annual plan ($44.99/year) includes a 7-day free trial. The trial is annual-only; the monthly plan has no trial. You’ll only be charged at the end of the trial, and you can cancel anytime in your Apple ID subscription settings before it ends.

How do I restore my purchase?

Open Settings inside the App and tap "Restore Purchases." This re-applies your active subscription if you’ve previously purchased one on this Apple ID.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Open the iOS Settings app, tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions. Find Stain Remover and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.

Privacy

Where do my photos go?

To restore a photo, the App sends it off your device to be processed: it’s uploaded to our backend, processed by our AI provider (Replicate) with short-lived storage on Cloudflare R2, then the restored image is returned. Uploads auto-delete within 24 hours, no human reviews them, and they’re never used to train AI. You can also tap Settings → Delete My Uploads to remove them immediately. Do you keep my photos?

No. Uploads and results are automatically deleted within 24 hours, and immediately when you tap "Delete My Uploads."

Do I need an account?

No account and no login. Free-tier limits are enforced per device using Apple’s DeviceCheck, which isn’t linked to your identity.
